The Sinking of the Bottle Ship

Jean Spence
The Sinking of the Bottle Ship

|In the early 20th century, Seaham Bottleworks were at the heart of the bottle industry. Bottles were regularly shipped from the town to London. The bottle ship the Oakwell was sunk by a mine in 1917 off Robin Hood's Bay, with the loss of 6 lives.
This limited edition lino print depicts the sinking ship, the range of bottles made, the glass works chimneys and workers' houses. Other images represent the industrial context in which the bottleworks thrived in Seaham: coal mining, railways, and docks.
