East Durham Artists' Network (EDAN) is a voluntary group of East Durham professional and amateur artists working in a wide variety of media, operating from the Art Block gallery in Seaham, close to the Byron Shopping Centre.

Formed in 2005, we are dedicated to developing the creative arts in East Durham, focusing on the diverse history, culture and interests of the area and its community, as well as hosting creative workshops.

Our artists use paint, photography, printing, writing, ceramics and textiles to tell the story of our local area by working with national and international arts organisations as well as local schools and universities, giving a voice to the next generation to encourage their interest and involvement in the arts.

We’re passionate about developing our own skills and practices as well as offering community based workshops, activities and exhibitions which aim to encourage greater understanding of and participation in arts in East Durham.  Many of our workshops and groups are open to the public and our members visit schools and community facilities to reach a wider audience.

For more information about our exhibitions, workshops, artists and location call in and see us at the

Art Block or contact us via our website, telephone, or facebook.

We look forward to seeing you!

The Art Block is the only dedicated art gallery in East Durham.

The building had something of an inauspicious but useful start as a toilet block which was closed down when Byron Place opened. EDAN took over the building in 2011 and volunteers worked hard to convert it into an art space.

Free exhibitions are held throughout the year on a range of subjects agreed by EDAN members. The gallery is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11.00 – 15.00 weekdays and 10.00 – 16.00 Saturdays. Visitors can check the Facebook Page east-durham-artists'-network for latest opening times and exhibition information.

The Art Block is also used for groups, workshops and other art-related activities. Watercolour painting classes are held weekly. Members can also book the Art Block for their own exhibitions.

EDAN also exhibit their work throughout the county and have held successful exhibitions in Durham’s Oriental Museum, the College of St. Hild and St. Bede, the World Heritage Site Visitors’ Centre in Durham City, at Manchester University and had an exchange exhibition with the Hebridean Artists’ Network in North Uist.

International exchange exhibitions have been mounted with galleries in Thailand and Australia, with Seaham’s twin town of Gerlingen in Germany, and in the Brussel’s headquarters of the European parliament.

You can call in and see us at the Art Block or contact us via our website, telephone, or facebook.

We look forward to seeing you!
