Division of Labour

The gendered division of labour in mining life was absolute. The man works underground, whilst the woman's role above ground was primarily reproduction and the care of all family and social matters above ground. The female image seems to be asleep but my idea in depicting her in this pose related rather to problems of grief and anxiety that were part of the realities of female existence when so many men died or were injured as a result of accidents in the pit.
