Penshaw Monument

Standing atop Penshaw Hill , this impressive local landmark, illuminated at night, has watched over a large part of the North East for generations. This memorial, in the style of a Greek Revival temple, was built to commemorate John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham. It is a Grade 1 listed structure and has been owned by the National Trust since 1939.
