I am sympathetic to renewable energy. However, in East Durham there is tension between the desire to preserve a recovering landscape, scarred by coal mining, and the deployment of that landscape for ‘green’ energy. Development proceeds without reference to local residents and without regard to their relationship with the landscape. Much of what is touted as 'green' or alternative energy covers up vested interests and profiteering that belies the need to consider how we use, abuse, and waste energy. The idea of 'green-washing' lies behind this piece. The hand-stitched word couplets on the net cover indicate some of the tensions.
