Wedding dress circa 1600
weathered steel pan scrubbers
Angela Sandwith
By using steel pan scrubbers to construct a wedding dress the romanticized ideal of marriage has been subverted. It links the celebration of a wedding directly to lifetimes of invisible and undervalued domestic labour, traditionally forced upon women. Allowing the dress to weather and decay with rust serves as a potent metaphor. The bright, metallic shine of the "new" dress breaking down into flaky, orange-brown rust mirrors how rigid gender roles, unequal dynamics, and repetitive labour can erode a person's identity and vitality over time.
