Designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green (father & son duo) as part of Richard Grainger’s grand design for the city centre, the Theatre Royal opened its doors on 20 February 1837.
Its Classical Revival architecture is a style produced by the Neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century in Italy, France and Germany, and is characterised by a grandeur of scale, simplicity of geometric forms, Greek (especially Doric) or Roman detail, dramatic use of columns and a preference for blank walls.
