Hibernation

Hibernation
Jean Spence
This piece is based on a patchwork of Harris Tweed offcuts and felt. It is overlaid with natural leaves, leaf skeletons and sycamore keys gathered in autumn and winter. Hidden within it are the forms of two celtic birds, lino-printed and then embroidered. The winter brings a stillness embodying the remains of the old and the potential of the new. Life retreats and hides. Wool and tweed are connected with the still earth and embody its consistency whatever the tension beween life and death as the year ends.
