Ghost Nest. Lumiere Durham 2023
Angela Sandwith
£80
In 2023 Angela was commissioned to produce Ghost Nest for the Uk's biggest light festival, Lumiere Durham.
The ethereal ‘Ghost Nest’ was made using discarded fishing nets, rope, and plastic objects all collected from the beaches of East Durham,UK.
This giant steel framed nest gives a message from nature with light at its heart.
During the day brightly coloured shredded rope interwoven with plastic objects invites the viewer to question the materials, walk around the nest, spot the objects peeking out from the sides and look into the core.
At night white EL wire woven through the nest glows constantly while LEDs positioned inside plastic objects are programmed to gradually glow and then fade at intervals. Children are particularly excited by this as they find dolls heads, plastic bottles, sunglasses, toy watering cans and other plastic objects come to life as they walk around the nest. The centre has been compared to a Witches cauldron, 3 spotlights are programmed to gradually glow then fade, the colours of the shredded and burnt rope appear to move, bringing the centre alive!
The message given by Ghost Nest is a global message about the effects of Ghost fishing and pollution of rivers, seas and coastlines; this is having a detrimental and overwhelming effect on the environment.
