How Deep is Your...Potholes
Kay Holborn Bond
A pool can be defined as a small but deep body of water. As the state of Britain's roads have become a campaign point for elections and a frequent feature in the news I decided to create a discussion piece centred around the official depth of a pothole in England in 2025 - I have seen potholes filled with water with ducks swimming in them, so that makes them a pool as well as a pothole!
Can you guess which pothole is officially deep enough to require attention?
All potholes featured in this art piece are stylised representations of real potholes from the County Durham area.
A separate reason for wanting to focus on potholes is the origin of the term 'Pothole', which literally refers to an area in a mud roadway where a potter has come along, dug out the exposed clay and left a hole. It is an ancient term that comes from rural pottery industries and the bad practices of lazy potters! As a ceramicist in 21st century, I love that this phrase has survived throughout the centuries.
