A Viking Hold

A Viking Hold
Charcoal on OS map in bespoke frame
Jac Seery Howard
Having been gifted an intriguing kelp holdfast growing on a piece of Shetland granite, it was hard not to anthropomorphise it into a viking ship. Their vessels would have been a feared sight from our north east shores back in the day. The intertwined strands of the holdfast are reminiscent of Celtic knotwork, hence the title. Using a regional map as a substrate felt appropriate since it is hoped that re-instating our island's kelp forests may slow down coastal erosion.
