Regeneration
oil on canvas
Roger Gadd
The site of Easington Colliery has been cleared and landscaped. Nature is returning and the area is used for recreation such as coastal walks, with or without a dog. Nearby is a cage from another colliery which stands as a memorial to the hard work, the noise and grime, the danger, pride and camaraderie and the vital role played by the Durham Coalfield in powering Britain in the past. My study for this painting was completed on a bright October day, when the terraced houses were silhouetted against the brilliant light of the sunlit North Sea.
