After The Seam

After The Seam
Liquid Acrylic and Sumi Ink
Nasim Akhtar
Inspired by sea coal collecting along the North East coastline, 'After the Seam' reflects on mining heritage and the industrial landscapes shaped by coal extraction. Rust, violet and rust-orange tones evoke corroded machinery, iron debris and the weathering of industry. The work explores a landscape eroding, surfacing and being reclaimed by the sea. The paper was submerged in the North Sea at Roker, where liquid acrylic and Japanese Sumi ink were added. Sand, decaying debris and sea coal marked the surface, creating textures shaped by the tide and its movements.
