Portrait of a Goddess

Portrait of a Goddess
Eve M. Jackson
As the theme of this exhibition is “connections”, I thought about the places and artwork that I feel connected to, despite often not knowing the artists or particularly relating to the subjects or themes involved. This colossal head of a goddess, or noble lady, part of a statue excavated in the ancient Hadrian’s market in Rome, is an artwork that I feel connects greatly with its audience.
Although its sculptor is long dead, and its original audience forgotten throughout the civilisations, this goddess still creates awe in the heart of her viewer — despite us not even knowing her name. And certainly despite the damage that thousands of years underground have rendered.
I wanted my audience to think about the power of space and time in art, and how we can be connected to different eras, religions, and societies through a simple photograph. That is almost a magical connection.
