Upcycled steel,sheet steel
Angela Sandwith

This work is a development from explorations into manipulating and drying kelp. I have experimented with kelp as a material, and I am fascinated by the way kelp transforms and becomes strong as it dries out. The addition of moisture restores it back to its original state. I have used materials as metaphors in this artwork. Piles of kelp can be found on beaches after high tides or rough seas, eventually they either rot, get washed back into the sea or dry out. The round steel bar was found on local beaches and collected over a long period of time. The sheet steel has been encouraged to transform its surface through the addition of moisture, resulting in visual texture which resembles a coastline.
