The Coast Reclaims Itself

The Coast Reclaims Itself
Oil on Board
Sandra Totty
These shores were once darkened by coal—scarred, polluted, and thought to be beyond repair. The loss of industry brought grief, and for a time, the damage was accepted as the cost of a fading way of life. Change came slowly. It took years for belief in recovery, and years more for tide and weather to do their work, loosening and washing away the remnants of industry. Gradually, the land softened and began to heal. Today, the coastline tells a different story: light on clean sand, reflections in clear water, and a renewed landscape that draws visitors for what has returned, not what was lost.
