Nature's Breakwater

Nature's Breakwater
Sandra Totty
This painting reflects the hidden architecture of a kelp forest — a living system that quietly sustains and protects our seas. Two forms rise from the seabed, their roots anchoring them firmly below while their fronds reach upward into shifting currents. Around them, suspended particles drift like plankton or light filtering through water, suggesting the rich ecosystems kelp supports.
Through fluid layers of blue, this piece invites the viewer to look beneath the surface and recognise kelp as a vital ally — a quiet guardian of biodiversity and a natural barrier standing between land and the rising force of the sea.
