Defence of the Realm
Bill Holmes
The magnesian cliffs of the North East coast are unique in their formation and structure. Hawthorn Dene and the beach area have a particular appeal to me, places where I have visited all my life and still do frequently. It is perhaps natural therefore that I have chosen the cliffs and the enterance of Hawthorn Dean as my point of reference for this particular project. Part of the impressice sstructure of Hawthorn Viaduct is seen in the background and standing in front of the ciffs is a second world war bunker. I consider it as a sentinal from times past, almost a guardian that now stands firm, as if to protect the magnesian cliffs behind it and the surrounding environment.
