Treasure
Angela Sandwith
‘Treasure’ Handmade cotton wool paper with inclusions, machine embroidery. The Magnesian Limestone cliffs in Seaham are at risk of serious erosion due to climate change. This will affect plants, insects, and animals significantly, some of whom may manage to survive, while others will become extinct. Caring for the unique character of the Mag Lime is paramount. I use materials as metaphors in my work, and the use of cotton wool in ‘Treasure’ originates from the phrase ‘to wrap something in cotton wool’, meaning to protect and care for something precious. This metaphor, when mapped onto the plight of the Magnesian Limestone, highlights the need to protect this unique area.
