East Durham Walk

East Durham Walk
East Durham Walk
Nasim Akhtar

This painting was inspired by a summer walk along the cliffs of East Durham, where the play of light across the landscape created an intensity of colour that stayed with me. I was struck by the contrast of the elements: the vast sweep of blue sky above, the narrow band of reds and purples stretching along the horizon, and the vivid green of wild grasses in the foreground. In this piece, I wanted to capture not just the view itself, but the energy and atmosphere of that moment. By working with a limited colour palette, I explored how abstraction can distill a place into pure mood and sensation. The thick, textured strokes of paint emphasise movement and rhythm, reflecting the raw edge of the coastline and the fleeting nature of light. East Durham Walk is both a memory of place and an exploration of how colour can carry emotion.
