Madonna Adrift

Madonna Adrift
Jean Spence
The image of the Madonna and child emerged from the lines and folds of the original mark-making. Surrounding that central piece are shapes that suggest clowns - hence the title of the piece. The shape produced by the folded paper is fragmented and fractured which seemed to emphasise the ways in which circuses operate - disrupting rationality. The stitching proceeded with this idea in mind, with the intention of enhancing the central image, and the paper was sewn onto the black textile circle to suggest the idea of a big top.
