This abstract work is inspired by my kelp studies and explores the landscape from an aerial perspective. While developing the composition, I was reminded of the bird’s-eye coastal views captured in Tom Hegen’s photography, where land and water form strong, graphic divisions.
The sweeping diagonal forms suggest shoreline boundaries or tidal movements seen from above. The composition simplifies natural elements into bold, abstract shapes, allowing texture and colour to carry the sense of place rather than literal representation. Layered blues and greens evoke the depth and movement of the sea, while contrasting sandy beige and muted ochre tones suggest shoreline and coastal terrain, creating balance between cool aquatic hues and warmer earth tones.
