Buffer 1
manipulated and pinned dried kelp
Angela Sandwith
.
This work is a development from explorations into manipulating and drying kelp. I have experimented with kelp as a material, and I am fascinated by the way kelp transforms and becomes strong as it dries out. Steel pins keep the rolls in place, once the kelp is dry the pins are held firmly. Upcycled steel was selected as a background because of its strength and the way it has started to develop a rusty patina which links to transformation and change of state.
Kelp forms dense underwater forests which act as buffers to waves, slowing them down and giving protection from strong waves which results in soil erosion.
