Defence of the Realm
Bill Holmes
The magnesium lime cliffs of the North East coast are unique in their formation and structure. Hawthorn Dene and the beach area have a particular appeal to me, places where I have visited all my life and still do frequently. It is perhaps natural therefore, that I have chosen the cliffs and the entrance of Hawthorn Dene as my point of reference for this particular project. Part of the impressive structure of Hawthorn viaduct is seen in the background and standing in front of the cliffs is a Second World War bunker. I consider it as a sentinel from the past, almost a guardian that now stands firm, as if to protect the magnesium cliffs behind it and the surrounding environment.
