The Coast Reclaims Itself

The Coast Reclaims Itself
Painted & Folded Book
Sandra Totty
This piece brings together two acts of renewal. The painted cover shows a coastline once shaped by coal, now restored by tide, light, and time. Within, the book is reimagined: its pages folded into a dog’s paw, a symbol of presence and a gentler footprint. By transforming a discarded object, the work highlights the value of reuse—how materials, like landscapes, can be given new purpose rather than cast aside. Together, image and form speak of care, recovery, and responsibility. In Beyond Coal, it reflects a shift toward restoration, where both the environment and the things we make are treated with greater respect.
