Manipulated.pinned and dried kelp, acrylic display case with yellow/green light
Angela Sandwith

This work is a development from explorations into manipulating and drying kelp. I have experimented with kelp as a material, and I am fascinated by the way kelp transforms and becomes strong as it dries out.
Kelp forms dense underwater forests which act as buffers to waves, slowing them down and giving protection from strong waves which results in soil erosion. Yellowy green light is beneficial for kelp because it matches the light wavelengths that penetrate deep into the ocean, allowing enhanced photosynthesis.
