10 Church Street

One of a series of 5 paintings of buildings local to Seaham. A classic example of mid-19th-century Victorian commercial/residential architecture and typical of rapidly developed industrial towns in Northeast England. Construction of the north side began around 1841 as part of the rapid growth of Seaham Harbour, driven by the Londonderry family’s development of coal ports, docks and railways. By the mid-1860s this commercial street was largely complete with dozens of houses/shops serving miners, dock workers and the growing town
