Ancient Riches

£120
This piece combines paint, ink, stitch and beading on paper and the warm copper/bronze colour scheme is followed through in the stitching using metallic and silk thread. The bronze metallic thread is used to create the design of an ancient Burmese coin and the burgundy silk thread to depict a fan which is a symbol of wealth and royalty in ancient civilisations through to modern culture. Metallic and glass beads add the finishing sparkle.
Much of my recent work has focused on the combined use of paint and stitch, initially on fabric but also now on paper. Sometimes I do the stitching by hand, as in this piece, and other times I use free-motion machine embroidery, sometimes both. I have always loved working with textiles and paint and really like to combine them both, something that I am keen to explore more in future.
