Moonrise
Jean Spence

This textile piece was made from recycled materials including pure silk and blackout cotton. It is hand embroidered using a range of threads. It is derived from my experience of the Isle of Skye.
In ancient civilisations and religions, including those associated with the Celts who inhabit the western isles of which Skye is a part, the moon is a female deity. Using a photograph that I had taken in Skye, the structure of this piece was laid out by my daughter, my grand-daughter and myself, and my young granddaughter cut out the moon. The fabric used comes from items used by women in my family, including my late mother. I was responsible for the final production which I worked whilst thinking about the relationship between femininity and the moon.
