Angel of the Pit

Angel of the Pit
Collage of found objects and hand stitch
Jean Spence
The boot soles and the metal image of the angel are decayed items relating to coal mining and industry above and on the Blast beach where the objects were found. The angel, which holds a child, signifies protection of the past and the future. The wings, made up of work-boot soles, suggest the hope of rising above the limits of coal mining. The hand -stitched pit wheel in the background indicates that the industry will not be forgotten whilst the angel guards the memories.
