Artist's Statement
I returned to practicing as a ceramicist once my two children started school, choosing not to return to my career as a further education lecturer. Since then I have been developing a new body of work that is inspired by many different passions, such as architecture, engineering and geometry, as well as decay and corrosion, the manmade in natural. I work with black and white film photography, print and paint in order to generate ideas that are then transformed into 3D sculptural ceramics pieces. My preferred clay of choice is black stoneware, which is then coated with slips, oxides stains and engobes to create various visual effects. I completed a BA (first class hons) specialising in ceramics in 2007 and MA in Ceramics in 2008 from University of Sunderland before embarking on a career as a lecturer (teaching quals obtained from same university in 2011). I have worked with Art Studio, a mental health charity, here I delivered ceramics based workshops as well as delivering art sessions to other community based groups. As a lecturer I taught at New College Durham and Newcastle College, delivery and leading on various Art and Design courses from level 2 and 3 BTEC course to Foundation art and design courses. My work is currently available to see at Washington Arts Centre along with that of two other EDAN members and many more talented local artists.
